Christians Are Urged to Pray as Obama Wins Election

Christian leaders are urging prayer as President Barack Obama was elected to a second term this week by a clear margin over Governor Mitt Romney.  Evangelist Greg Laurie summed up the general feeling: “Now is the time to pray for our president for the great challenges that he will face in the days ahead.” Albert Mohler, president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, remarked more specifically and boldly in his blog, “We must pray that God will change President Obama’s heart on a host of issues, ranging from the sanctity of unborn life to the integrity of marriage. We must push back against his contraception mandate that tramples upon religious liberty. Given the trajectory of his first term in office, we are urgently concerned about a second term, knowing that the president will never again face the electorate.”

In a letter published on his blog, author and pastor Max Lucado comforted believers: “Let others lose sleep over the election. Let others grow bitter from party or petty rivalries. Let others cast their hope with the people of the elephant or the donkey. Not followers of Jesus. We place our trust in the work of God. … How many kings has he seen come and go? How many nations has he seen stand and fall? He is above them all. And he oversees them all. So, while others get anxious, we don’t. Here is what we do: we pray.”

And in his blog, president of LifeWay Research Ed Stetzer said he prayed immediately when the results were clear. He reminds readers, “When our King returns, He won’t be riding a donkey or elephant.” Bethlehem Baptist pastor John Piper quoted Daniel 4:25 on Twitter: “The Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.” And Rick Warren posted on Twitter: “Our hope is not in the man we put in the White House but in the Man we put on the Cross.”
